Film Opening - Mise-En-Scene

Production Logo

We have created our production title of 'Ginger Nut Productions'. This is our own unique idea and the whole group was involved with making the final piece, as we individually decorated a gingerbread person each so that it looked like us as we feel this makes our production logo much more personal. Arren did the main animation as the rest of the group have been editing. She has done it simply and made it clear exactly what it says for our logo. This shows our creativity and individual taste, this is very different to what any other group has done as well, giving us more benefit in a unique logo.

This is the picture that we created and we really liked it. We were happy enough with this to upload this on to the computer and to start to edit it with Photoshop were able to move the letters and ginger bread men around to create a more even spaced logo.

Photoshop was really useful as we could use the layers within it to create a full picture.
We individually saved these layers so when we uploaded them onto moviemaker it would be easier to animate our production logo.

Once we had saved all the individual layers we were able to create our opening titles on moviemaker.

We are really happy with our production logo and think it will stand out from the rest it is homemade and original.

Editing Update

This week we have been editing all the lucy and jay clips which have been more difficult than the bridget and johnathan clips as they are outside. Although the filming went well when we watched the clips back we had missed out on some of the problems with the footage as one of the shots has the boom in it which caused a problem at first but we have been able to solve the problem and now we are back on track to finishing our 2 minute film opening!

Filming Update

Today we will be filming all of the footage for Jay and Lucy, hopefully everything will go well so we won't have to re-shoot anything. We are all a bit worried about the sound as we have found out that we haven't got a long enough lead for the boom and the weather is letting us down as it is very windy.. hopefully the audio will be good enough!

Editing Update

This week we have been able to edit all of the Bridget and Johnathan shots which means we are now ready for the rest of the 2 minute film opening! Although i think we all underestimated how difficult editing can be as we all had different opinions and ideas for each clip.

Filming Update

Today we are filming all the scenes with Bridget and Johnathan, as we have finally been able to organise a weekend when they are both free. Hopefully it will all go well otherwise its going to be difficult to re-organise  both actors to shoot the footage again!

Job Roles

Producer:
Producers are the main players in film industries. A producer will oversee each project from conception to completion and may also be involved in the marketing and distribution processes. Producers work closely with directors and other production staff on the shoot.

We have decided to all participate in this role as we are all part of our production company.
We all have the vision of the film which we want to produce and have all had an input in who we want to market it to.

Director:
They oversee everything on a movie set and have to realise their artistic vision at the same time. Directors work with actors, set designers, costumers  editors and lighting technicians. They deal with everyone from the make-up artists and tech workers to cinematographers and art directors.

We have decided to have Jess bell as our Director as she drew the story board and visualised all of our ideas onto paper and we feel she would be the best to organise everyone in order to achieve the best overall 2 minute film opening.

Camera:
The role of a camera operator is to do more than just silently stand behind the camera and record things. A camera operator also provides knowledge that enable directors, editors and producers to present "stories" visually.

We have decided to have Kim Ware as our camera woman as she the most confident and efficient with the camera.

Sound:
A sound engineer is a technical who operates recording the sounds of the film opening. Also making sure that the sounds fits the film when it comes to editing the film opening.

We have decided to use Arren Doughty for our sound woman as she feels confident in been able to achieve the best sound possible for our film opening.

Lighting:
This person operates the artificial lighting when needed on set. And makes sure this lighting is in keeping with the rest of the scene. They make sure that it’s not too high key or low key and that the elements in which we want to be high lightened are visible.

We have decided to use Vicky Pritchard for our lighting as we think she will be able to recognise what the right lighting is for our film as she knows the conventions of Romantic Comedies.

Planning - Characters, Location and Cast

This week me and my group have been trying to decide on the three important parts of our film opening, the characters in the film, who will play our characters and where we are going to film our film opening.

We have decided we are going to have 4 key characters which are; Lucy as the main character, Jay who is the boyfriend, Bridget who plays the mother of Lucy and finally Johnathan who is the father of Lucy.

We have chosen Jessica Codd to play the character of Lucy, this is because we all agree that Jessica has the right look that we are looking for as well as having experience in drama and performing.

For the character of Jay, the boyfriend, we have decided on Greg Reynolds. Not only does he have the perfect look we are looking for and a comical side to him but he has also agreed for us to use his kitchen which we think is the perfect location for the characters Bridget and Johnathan, the parents, to be when we film them preparing for the meeting of the new boyfriend as it is a fantastic size and has the right style.

For the character of Bridget, Lucy's mum, we have chosen Tracy Eglon who is Vicky Pritchard's mum. We decided on Tracy as she is a mum so she will know how to play a good mother, we also feel she will be able to play a quite, polite character, we also feel she will be able to play the more controlling side to the marriage with Johnathan.

The character of Johnathan, Lucy's dad, will be played by Matt Goodman. We all agree that he has the right look to play Lucy's dad and we also agree that he will be able to play an over protective dad very well as he has a family of his own.

For the location of Lucy and Jay's scene where they are walking to the parents house, we are going to use the village of Tealby, as it is a quite peaceful village with lovely scenery which we all agreed would be our perfect setting. Another reason we chose Tealby is because it challenges the stereotypical famous cities that are the usual settings for romantic comedies.

Pitch

This is our pitch for our two film opening ideas to our media class. We pitched our ideas to our class so we could gain some feedback from an unbiased audience, below is our pitch:

The general feedback we got back from the class was positive. I think the positive response might of been because me and my group have chosen to do a romantic comedy, which is different to the rest of the classes ideas. The two different film ideas that we came up with were as followed:

Idea 1: A young couple walking down a street to the girls parents house, while the girl is giving her boyfriend quick fire questions about her parents which are comical and switching scenes to the girls parents house, where the mother is cooking dinner while the father is bickering about meeting the boyfriend.

Idea 2: A couple are at the girls parents house having dinner, as the girl picks up he glass it fades to the girl picking up a glass at a party like a flashback. We then see the scene of how her and her boyfriend met.

A vote was taken, the class agreed that the first idea was there favourite, this is because it is more comical compared to the second idea, which focused more on the romance side of the genre. The first idea was also our favourite idea so we are now going to focus on making it very comical as well as romantic.

Target Audience Research

After analysing the graph on types of film that the general public typically enjoy watching from page 105, We have recognised that our chosen genre Romantic Comedy is well established, being the 7th highest out of 27, which shows it is popular with 37% of people saying that they enjoy this genre.

Analysing the graph in page 106 shows a full breakdown by demographics and market segments of who our chosen genre appeals to. our chosen genre romantic comedy most appeals to females under 35, with 61% enjoying romantic comedies. The next popular being females over the age of 35, followed by men over the age of 35 which means our primary audience is females under 35 and our secondary audience is women over the age of 35.

Looking at the graph of page 116 the percentage who rated romantic comedy as there favourite is 14%, which makes romantic comedy the 8th most popular. Although this seem pretty low, half of our genre is comedy which is the highest rated favourite, this give us an indication of what will appeal more to an audience.

This graph on page 20, tells us that females have the highest number of people that attend the cinema with 1168 of females watching films at the cinema in the last three months and only 1060 males, this suggests that our target audience is perfect as we are aiming towards females.

On page 123, it tells us the types of films that the general public would like to see more of in the future. Romantic comedy has 37% of people saying they would like to see more of these types types of films. This is a promising result as it means that a big percentage of the general public enjoy romantic comedies.

This screen shot of the top rated movies page from The Numbers tells us that the films in the top 8 recent releases has some aspects of romantics comedies. It also shows us a table of the all time top rated movies, the second, third and forth are all romantic comedies, which suggests we will have a big target audience that will enjoy our film.

This is a screen shot of top-grossing genres from 1995-2012. Romantic comedy is rated 6th out of 14 different genres. It also tells us that there has been 403 romantic comedies with 5.92% of the market share. This implies that there is a market for rom-coms, although comedy is the top rated genre for movies which suggests we need to put more comedy into our film opening than romance.

This is a screen shot from Box Office Mojo, It shows the latest top ten films that have recently been released in cinemas at the moment. Currently there is two comedy films in the top 10 which shows that there is still a market for our genre.

Finding out all of this information has helped us to find out who we aiming our chosen film genre too. We have decided to aim our film opening to a primary audience of females aged between 12 and 35, including a secondary audience of females above 35. However, we will also aim our film opening to the male audience as a secondary audience in order to appeal a wider range of demographics.

Target Audience Interviews

This is a video containing four interviews that we carried out to gain more information on our chosen genre. These interviews cover both our primary and secondary audiences.

From the interviews we found out that it was very important to the audience for romantic comedies that the film has to end with a happy ending. We asked the question if it was important to have good looking characters in the film? We had a mixed reply to this as our younger target audience agreed that they enjoyed watching the film more if there was good looking characters, whereas the older primary audience and the secondary audience said that it makes little difference to the film.

We also learned that no elements of romantic comedies distracted them but if there is too much going on in the film or the audience couldn't relate to the characters in the film they became less interested.

My Group and Genre

My group for the film opening is Arren Doughty, Jessica Bell, Vicky Pritchard and myself. We have all decided that we are going to do a Romantic Comedy, this is because we all watch these sorts of films and familiar with them which has given us loads of ideas for our film opening.

Brief

Media Task: The titles and opening of a new fiction film to last a maximum of two minutes.
