After we decided that we wanted to create a romantic comedy in order to attract and address our audience we needed to know what they look for in romantic comedies and what they like, dislike and why? We did this by interviewing different types of people from the age ranges of 13-56 both male and female, we interviewed these people as they were part of our primary and secondary audience and it is very important to find out what they would like to see in a romantic comedy. Below is the interviews:
The questions we asked included:
- Their Name, Age and Occupation.
- What would you like to see in a Romantic Comedy?
- What Romantic Comedies do you already like and why?
- What things distract you in a film?
- What sort of actors do you like to see in a Romantic Comedy and why?
- What don't you want to see in a Romantic Comedy? What are you bored of seeing?
This was very helpful as we found out a range of answers from our interviewees, they all agreed that a romantic comedy has to have romance, happy endings, good looking actors/actresses and most importantly it has to have comedy through out the film. Distractions in romantic comedies mainly included items that were not important in the film or things that were unnecessary.
Taking the feedback from the interviewees in to consideration, we then went and drafted two possible ideas for our two minute film opening. We then pitched both of these ideas to the class to get feedback both positive and critical, this was to help decide which idea would appeal to our audience the most. We trusted their opinion as they were also part of our target audience. Our class choose idea one, which is what we chose too, as it had more comedy to the idea and that is what the majority of the audience enjoys more. Therefore pitching our ideas to our target audience shows our planning and research into the film opening as well as seeing if our ideas were going to be successful or not. Below is our pitch:
So using all of the information we found out about romantic comedies it helped us to create our film opening to atrract our audience including:
Romance:
Target audience members mentioned that romance was a huge part of romantic comedies and a few mentioned how the guy always has to get the girl at the end of the film so we played with this to create romance at the start of our film. Romance is also clearly a massive theme of rom-coms so it had to be included in our film opening to attract our audience.
Comedy:
As our target audience wanted more of a comedy film opening than a romantic one as they agreed it would attract them more to the film we have been able to create comedy through out our film, such as when Jay cant remember Lucy's parents names, the 'BJ' scene between Johnathan and Jay and the interrupted kiss. The comedy side of the rom-com is most important attracting our secondary audience who are males under 35.
Actors/Actresses:
Our target audience all agreed that it was very important to have attractive actors and actresses as it made the film more appealing as 'it is nice to have someone good to look at'. This was something we took into consideration when choosing our leading roles. We chose Greg and Jess as we all agreed that they were both very attractive and would appeal to a wide range of people.
Enigma:
- How did the couple meet?
- Are they in love?
- Why doesn't Johnathan want Lucy to have a boyfriend?
- Why does Johnathan hate Jay?
- What has Jay done wrong?
- Is Lucy and Jay's relationship going to last?
- Will Johnathan ever be friends with Jay?
In conclusion we have attracted/addressed our audience by taking everything into consideration what they have told us to brainstormed and create a film opening by putting all of the things they have said together, A romantic comedy with romance, comedy, enigma and good looking actors/actresses. Overall we all feel we have done our best to attract our audience.
Good work - might also want to mention age and apperance (clothing, etc) of actors. perhaps music and text/titles too.
