A film distributor is a company or individual responsible for the marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of a film and the method by which a film is made available for viewing: for example, directly to the public either theatrically or for home viewing i.e. DVD, video-on-demand, download, television programs, Blu-Ray etc.). A limited distributor may deal only with particular products, such as DVDs or Blu-ray, or may act in a particular country or market.
There are six main film distributor's, these distributors have the highest percentage of the market share as well as owning their own distributor companies who will also make a film available globally to a massive audience. Top six film distributor's:
- Warner Bro's
- Walt Disney Pictures
- Sony Pictures
- Paramount Pictures
- 20th Century Fox
- Universal
Our film is quite Mainstream as it is a film that a lot of people will enjoy as well as being very popular genre of film in the film industry. This means that our audience is big as Romantic Comedies has something for everybody. This means that to make our film we will need quite a big budget to make and promote our film, to promote our film we will have many adverts in magazines, on buses, billboards, television adverts and cinema adverts.
Although most Romantic comedies are big budget films to make a good film you don't always have to have a big budget to make a profit as there are two well known films from our genre that made massive profits from small budgets, these two films are Juno and Little Miss Sunshine.
Juno had a budget of $7million. The film then went on to get $231,450,102 from the Worldwide Box Office and then another $58,095,176 from Domestic DVD sales, this means in total Juno made a massive profit of $289,545,278. This film was distributed by Fox Searchlight who is a distributor owned by 20th Century Fox.
Little Miss Sunshine had a budget of $8million. Little Miss Sunshine then made $100,550,977 from the World Wide Box Office and then carried on to get another $55,516,153 from Domestic DVD Sales, meaning Little Miss Sunshine made a total profit of $156,067,130. This film was distributed by Fox Searchlight which is a distributor owned by 20th Century Fox.
We have decided that the distributor we would want to use is Sony Pictures as they are the third biggest distributor with a 12.96% share of the market, as well as having the most releases of Romantic Comedies out of all six of the top-grossing distributors. Sony Pictures also distributed the films that we have taken inspiration from the most for example Friends With Benefits, The ugly Truth, The Holiday and Just Go With It.
In 2011 Sony Pictures had five films in the top ten for Box office performance for romantic comedy movies, this shows that Sony pictures is the best distributor for our genre.
We have decided that the film studio we are going to use is Sony Pictures as they will be able to produce, promote and distribute our film as they have a number of Romantic Comedies that they have done which have become great hits.
We expect that our film will go to a multiplex cinema as our film is a mainstream film which is aimed at a mainstream audience. This is due to the wide target audience and the nature of the genre.
One of the biggest parts of distribution is marketing, This means that we would have to advertise our film where our target audience would see it. We would want our film to be advertised in women's magazines so it will be seen by our target audience, as well as being on buses, billboards, and at the start of films similar to our genre, this is so we can create the biggest audience possible.
